Healthcare
There are two main medical facilities providing care for patients in the area are Sacred Heart Medical Center and McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center. Both will be building new medical facilities starting this year. Current facilities offer traditional and alternative birth units, treatment in more than 25 specialties, and 24-hour emergency care. Both hospitals are designated as full Level II trauma centers by the Oregon Health Division. The facilities provide advanced treatments such as magnetic resonance imaging, CT scanning, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound. The hospitals also provide programs and services for women and older adults, and nutrition and weight management programs. In addition, occupational health programs, health education classes, local HMOs, and the largest private injured workers program in the state are available.
Eugene/Springfield offers the most advanced arthroscopic and orthopedic surgery in the country. In addition, its innovative sports medicine programs enjoy an international reputation for excellence, and have served such world-class athletes as Mary Decker Slaney, Alberto Salazar, Joan Benoit, and Michael Jordan.
All firefighters in the Eugene/Springfield area are required to be certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), and full cardiac arrest kits are present in all ambulances, fire trucks and some police cars. All emergency response personnel are well-trained and have access to the most up-to-date medical equipment.
Health care services are also available throughout the rest of the county. PeaceHealth operates hospitals in Cottage Grove and Florence.
